Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Makenna Franklin, I am a senior at Plymouth State University combining Social Work, Psychology, and Health to make my own major called Patient Advocacy under an Interdisciplinary Studies degree (IDS). I have a passion for helping people and I want to change the way that the health care system looks at patients; I want patients to be seen as partners and not as passive recipients. I want to support patients and make sure that their voice is heard when they are at their weakest and make navigating the health care system easier. My ultimate goal is to get my masters in Social Work and build a career in Mental Health Case Management.
I have not always been an IDS major, I initially started my journey at Plymouth State University in the Nursing department, due to unforeseen circumstances I was dropped out of the program in the Spring of my Junior year. At first, I was devastated, but slowly I started to see it as a blessing because I was having doubts about if Nursing really was for me. Over the years, working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I have seen the field change drastically, I feel like it isn’t as patient-centered as it used to be; nurses don’t have enough time to spend with patients and patient voices are rarely heard. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason so I am using my senior year to rediscover myself and build a career that I absolutely love that is more patient-focused.
During my free time I like to go on road trips with friends or visit my hometown (New Bedford, Massachusetts) to see my six animals, family, and best friend of ten years.
